Make your own Vintage Granny Square Coat Hanger

Hello Vintage lovers!

If you are reading this I believe that you too are a lover of all things vintage and also feel the need to give those special garments some TLC by providing them with a beautiful hanger to rest upon!

I had an idea of using up some scraps of  Little Cotton I had lying around and am madly into Granny Squares at present. So combine the two and VOILA, a brand new hanger for me!

Just 5 little squares is all you need for this project - so follow along with me and you can make your very own.

YOU WILL NEED:

1 X wooden/old coat hanger - you can find them in thrift or second hand shops or like me, you may have one or two still hanging in your wardrobe. If not - maybe ask an older relative, Mum or Gran!

Some 5ply/6ply , Sport weight yarn (I used Little Cotton)

A 3 -3.5mm crochet hook or suitable size hook for the yarn you are using.

An embroidery needle to weave in the ends

Scissors

LETS BEGIN!

Round 1.

Let's start by making a magic circle, and chain 3. This counts as your first stitch.

Then crochet 11 more double crochets into the magic circle. Pull tight to close. Total 12 sts

Cut your yarn and join to the top of the first chain 3 with an invisible join, or slip stitch here if you are using the same colour.

I have used different colours for each round so have cut the yarn and done an invisible join for each round.

Round 2.

This round we will be doing a double crochet cluster stitch.

Join on your new colour into the top of one of your double crochets from the previous round and chain 2. This will count as your first stitch DC. If you are using the same colour just slip stitch into the top of your first DC from the first round.

Do another double crochet stitch into the same stitch but do not complete the stitch. You should have 2 stitches left on your hook.

Do another DC stitch into the same stitch you should have 3 stitched left on your hook. Yarn over and complete the stitch. Chain1.

Repeat the double crochet cluster stitch in the next stitch. Repeat 10 more times.

You will end up with 12 DC cluster stitches in this round. Cut the yarn and do another invisible join, or slip stitch in the top of your first cluster stitch if using the same colour.

Round 3.

Join on your new colour in between the cluster stitches from the previous rounds and chain 3.

Do 2 more DCs into the same stitch, you will have a cluster of 3 DCs.

Repeat this 11 more times, placing your 3 DCs in between each cluster stitch, you will have 12 in total.

Cut the yarn and do another invisible join, or join to the top of the first chain 3 from the previous round if you are using the same colour.

Round 4.

Join on your new colour in the top of the first DC of the DC cluster. Chain 3. DC twice more in the same stitch. You should have 3 DCs in this first stitch.

Chain 1 then do 3 more DCs in the same stitch. This is making the corner of your square.

*Skip 2 sts then do 3 x Half Double Crochet stitches in the same stitch. (you will be crocheting in the top of the first DC of each cluster)

Skip 2 sts then do 3 x HDC in same stitch.

Skip 2 sts then do 3DC in same stitch, chain1, 3 DC in same stitch (another corner)*

REPEAT * TO * 2 more times to complete your final corner, then skip 2 sts, 3HDC in same stitch, skip 2 sts, 3HDC in same stitch, you will have 2 sts left, this will bring you back to your first corner.

Cut your yarn and finish with an invisible join.

Make 5 squares of however many you need to cover the length of your coat hanger. It just worked out perfectly that I need exactly 5, and the coat hanger hook was able to fit through the middle of the magic circle and screw in the hanger again!

You may block your squares if you like, I blocked mine as it helped them to flatten out a little.

I sewed them together using the flat slip stitch method, then folded it over the hanger and used a single crochet to join up the edges. Cut your yarn, and weave in the ends where you have sewn, then screw back in your hook to hang.

If you are after some crochet tips and how to do the flat slip stitch method - Naztazia crochet on YouTube has some great tutorials.

I think this hanger would look just as gorgeous in one solid colour - it would make an amazing gift for someone - especially a bride to hang her dress on!

You can shop my LITTLE COTTON range here which makes the perfect sized squares using a Clover Amour hook.

Enjoy!
