BRAIDED CORDS - Everything you need to know about this versatile fibre

Whether your project is crochet, knitting, macrame or weaving, Braided Cords are an excellent fibre choice that will compliment any project.

What are Braided Cords?

These cords are created using many recycled fibres woven or braided together on a custom machine created especially for this purpose. The end result is a hollow tube that is then ideally filled with recycled cotton to create a beautifully soft finished cord.

Surprisingly, you can easily use the same cord many times over without damaging the form if you are not satisfied with your finished piece. Bonus hey? If you are a beginner at any craft you can be assured that you can make as many mistakes as you like and the cord will still be perfect!

I have been working with the wonderful husband and wife team, Tomasz and Aleksandra from Bobbiny since early 2018 and over the years I have witnessed their range start with Braided Cords and grow to macrame cords and ropes in many different widths with a colour range that is unrivalled.

Bobbiny was brought to life by Tomasz and Aleksandra in 2014, and today their company employs many locals and continues to manufacture products of the highest quality.

Made with production waste from textile factories, no dyes, chemicals or water is involved in the production of the fibres used in their finished products.

Why can't I get a true fully recycled braided cord here in Australia?

To this day there are no suppliers of recycled fibre waste in Australia, so any imitation cords you may find on the market here in this country are made using imported fibres.

The ideal Braided Cord also contains 100% recycled cotton filling, not polyester filling or general cotton fill, and is certified safe to use on children's, pet or food products. No product constructed here in Australia has that very important certification.

What widths are Braided Cords available in?

You can find Bobbiny's Braided Cord range in store now in Jumbo 9mm, Premium 5mm and Junior 3mm. And for some inspiration, please take the time to look at Bobbiny's tutorials, where you will be sure to find a project to start you off! You can find many of their helpful tutorials on their Instagram page.

What can I create using Braided Cords?

Braided Cords are amazing to work with and the list of projects is endless, but if you are looking for inspiration, please read on! Here I detail some of my favourite makers who often use Braided Cords in their projects - with stunning results.

For Crochet lovers - The beautiful Elizabeth from Elizabeth Park Collections, has used Bobbiny Junior 3mm Braided Cords to create her own design - The Bree Clutch. Elizabeth also creates baskets and larger totes using Braided Cord. A clever designer and beautiful knitter, you can find Elizabeth on Instagram or Facebook, or featured in the Autumn 2022 issue of Yarnologie magazine.

Also in the Macrame field is Hermes from Knotie Aspen who has built a business making the most stunning dog leashes and pet bandanas. Their colour choices are divine, and any special pet would be worthy of strutting their stuff wearing one of their designs. Hermes uses a variety of Braided Cords and 3ply Bobbiny Ropes for their designs. You can shop their gorgeous designs in their online store, or visit their Instagram account.

Want to try Weaving? Then Rachel from Lush Little Loops is a master at incorporating Bobbiny Braided Cords into her stunning weaves. The colour combinations are next level, and she also has some wonderful tutorials on how to get started with weaving and how to incorporate Braided Cord into your weaves. If you have access to Instagram you can see her inspiring reel here. Rachel's Cloud Weave was made using Bobbiny Braided Cord in Junior 3mm in IRIS, and one of my cloud looms which will be restocked in the coming weeks.

Beginners you will need to note that Braided Cord does not brush out like string to give a fringe, or to make fluffy tassels. For a luxurious fringe or to make tassels, try Recycled Cotton Soft in 3mm or 5mm or any of the Bobbiny Single Twist range.

I also have beautiful books in store that will help any beginner ignite their passion for any fibre craft - MACRAME FOR BEGINNERS AND BEYOND - the perfect beginners guide, MACRAWEAVE - a true must for any fibre lover, THE WOVEN HOME - a delight for anyone who wants to have a crack at weaving.

Want to give Braided Cords a go? Then I highly recommend Bobbiny products for any project!

HAPPY CRAFTING!
